ROUND 1 PREVIEWS
Monday, June 28th
Game 1 @ 10:00 AM
#8 De La Salle (3A) vs. #9 Jefferson Lions (2A)

The first round’s 8 versus 9 match-up features two of the smaller school teams in the Oregon Madness tournament, and both have had similar seasons. The De La Salle North Catholic Knights (3A; 13-3), led by Coach Broadous, started the season on a tear, winning ten straight games before suffering their first loss of the season. The Knights were getting back on track when they fell to eventual 3A state champion Yamhill Carltonand then to Santiam Christian, bringing their season to a close. The Jefferson Lions (2A; 13-4), led by second-year head coach Danny Aguilar, also won their first ten games of the season before dropping their first contest. Similar to De La Salle, the Lions ended the season with back-to-back losses. Now, one of these teams hopes to rediscover the magic they started the season with and head to the Oregon Madness Elite Eight.

Game 2 @ 11:30 AM
#6 Yamhill Carlton (3A) vs #11 Central (5A)

Yamhill Carlton (3A; 13-4) enters Oregon Madness fresh off its 3A state title win on Thursday night. The Tigers, who won their first state title since 1992, made history of another sort as well on Thursday, as coach Heather Roberts became the first female coach in Oregon history to lead a boys team to a state championship. Led by sophomore twin brothers Moroni and Malachi Seely-Roberts, Yamhill Carlton will take on the Central Panthers (5A; 4-11) in the first round. Central is reeling after losing three of its final four games of the season. Coach Dean Sanderson and the Panthers are hoping to turn things around at the end of the season, but it will be a tall order against the hot Tigers.

Game 3 @ 1:30 PM

#5 Sprague (6A) vs #12 Canby (6A)

Sprague (6A; 11-4) and star big man Dallon Morgan, one of the top ranked players in Oregon’s class of 2022, will have their hands full in the first round, taking on a Canby (6A; 8-8) team that has a chip on its shoulder after being seeded 12th for the Oregon Madness tournament. Canby is coming off a hard-fought win over Wilsonville in the Green Bracket and will be looking to show the committee that it’s underestimating what this team is capable of. Star player Alex Evans and the Cougars have suffered seven losses by single digits this season and are hoping to break the trend and finish on the winning end of what’s sure to be a closely-contested first round game.
Game 4 @ 3:00 PM
#4 West Salem (5A) vs #13 Butte Fall Loggers (1A)

Winners of seven of their last eight games, a strong West Salem Titans team (5A; 11-3) starts off its pursuit of the Oregon Madness crown with a match-up against a hungry Butte Fall Loggers team (1A; 5-2) that performed well in just seven games this season and is looking to prove itself on the big stage. West Salem, led by coach Travis Myers, has made significant strides from last season, but the Titans better not look past their opponents in this first round match-up. The Loggers won their five games by an average of over thirty points and will be relying on their strong offense to deliver them an upset in the first round.

Game 5 @ 5:00 PM
#3 South Medford (6A) vs #14 North Salem (5A)

Following its completion of a season sweep of rival North Medford on Friday night, the South Medford Panthers (6A; 14-1) head into Oregon Madness with a wave of momentum and their eyes on a Final Four showdown with the top-seeded Grant Generals. The Panthers will also be looking to prove to the committee that they deserved a higher seeding than their rivals from North Medford. Facing off against coach James Wightman and his team in the first round of the tournament is a North Salem Vikings (5A; 2-10) team that believes it’s better than its record suggests. After a tough season, the Vikings are looking to end the year on a high note, but they’ll need to play their best game of the year to overcome South Medford and its standout Jackson Weiland.

Game 6 @ 6:30 PM
#2 North Medford (6A) vs #15 St. Paul (1A)

The second-seeded North Medford Black Tornado (6A; 14-2 overall) team comes into tournament play with its sights set on taking home the Oregon Madness championship title after suffering its second tough loss to rival South Medford on Friday night. With longtime coach Scott Plankenhorn at the helm and the Neff brothers in the backcourt, North Medford is heavily favored in its match-up against the St. Paul Buckaroos (1A; 5-10 overall), one of just two teams in Oregon Madness representing 1A. First year coach Kevin Baker has the Buckaroos playing well as of late, with a 4-3 record in their last seven games, and nothing would complete the team’s turnaround this season like a first-round upset and a trip to the Elite Eight of Oregon Madness.

Game 7 @ 8:00 PM
#1 Grant (6A) vs #16 Roseburg (6A)

Following a close loss to Beaverton in the Red Bracket tournament that ended their season on Thursday night, the Grant Generals are more determined than ever to prove themselves by bringing home the title of Oregon Madness Champions this week. The top-seeded Generals (6A; 14-3 overall), led by coach Robert Key and talented players Adrian Mosley and Logan Going, will start tournament play as the heavy favorite against the 16 seed team from Roseburg (6A; 5-10). Led by first year coach Jordan Humphreys, Roseburg has been in rebuilding mode after losing seven seniors from last year’s team, and there would be nothing more memorable for this group than to score a massive upset against tournament favorite and perennial powerhouse Grant.
